Waitrose Roof refurbishment treads lightly on environment

Name of project:  Waitrose
Location:  Aylesford near Maidstone, Kent
Membrane:  Spectraplan
Contractors:  Genco Construction Services
Size:  10,200 sq m

The roof to a Waitrose distribution centre has been completely refurbished in a single ply membrane system chosen for its sustainable credentials and no disruption to the retailer’s 24/7 operations at Aylesford near Maidstone, Kent.

Supplied by SIG Design and Technology, 10,200m2 of IKO’s Spectraplan single ply membrane was specified for its ability to contribute to a BREEAM Very Good rating for the project which is in line with Waitrose’s mission to ‘tread lightly on the environment’.

SIG Design and Technology, which is part of SIG plc, proposed a value engineered solution with the capability to offer next day deliveries from the nearest branch of SIG Roofing Supplies to the site.

Accredited Spectraplan installers, Genco Construction Services chose Spectraplan because of its ease of application on such a large project and availability through the SIG network.

The entire roof refurbishment was captured by time-lapse camera for Waitrose’s Estates Department over the four month fast-track installation.

Genco’s Spectraplan trained installers first stripped back the existing bituminous roof which had come to the end of its useful working life. Some of the existing metal deck also needed removing and replacing. The entire roofing system was completed refurbished using a self-adhered vapour control layer, 140mm insulation board and the fully-adhered Spectraplan TPE membrane.

IKO has guaranteed the new Spectraplan roofing system for 20 years on both materials and labour.
